THE STORY THUS FAR: in a two-parter, gin-san helped santa deliver toys and then got into a fight with hattori over a copy of jump, gin-san and kagura did some snowdicking during an impromptu kabukicho snow festival and then the odd jobs crew got hired to look after a senile fireworks technician, and zura hid from the shinsengumi in a ramen shop run by a woman whose husband was killed by the anti-foreigner faction

Time for another story arc already? This is the first episode of the Umibozu story arc, and unlike the amnesia arc, this one got a special trailer at the end of the last episode.

The episode opens with a couple of random dudes talking about a movie, when they spot some kind of dinosaur-thing posed like it’s about to attack them. On closer inspection, however, they discover that it’s not a dinosaur-thing, but rather Kagura’s dad holding up the corpse of the dinosaur thing and complaining about being hungover.

He throws the corpse at the dudes, tells them that it’s “main body” escaped and is probably running around Edo somewhere, and instructs them to call the police and tell them “Umibozu is calling.”

After that, Kagura gets scammed into going to the bank and throwing rice around because puns, just as a monk who’s being possessed by the alien is about to rob the place.

Gin-san and Shinpachi get dragged (literally, by Kagura) into the mess with the alien, and Umibozu shows up and blows the thing to bits right before it can eat them.

Some more stuff happens that I’m not going to bother mentioning because this is already turning into more of an episode summary than an episode review, and then Kagura and her dad get into a huge fight when he tries to make her come home with him, which culminates in Gin-san showing up and firing Kagura.

I liked this episode much more than the first half of the amnesia story. Granted, that’s mainly because amnesia as a plot device is annoying, overdone, and lazy, but the subplot with the incredibly stupid movie is hilarious, and Umibozu is yet another incredibly fun character.

Next episode continues the Umibozu story. Till next time.
