DISCLAIMER: For whatever reason, my PS3 doesn’t want to connect to Crunchyroll this morning, so I have to watch this episode on my phone, which may or may not influence my opinion.
This is one of those episodes that doujinshi are spawned from, as Kagura spends the bulk of it being distressed in a damsel-ish fashion by a gross tentacle monster (technically, it’s more sludge then tentacle but the effect is about the same). Gin-san manages to get her to free herself by eating a piece of her pickled seaweed, and then Matsudaira blows them and the alien the fuck up.
Obviously they don’t die since this is episode 42 out of 320 (and counting), but it does end the arc, as Umibozu gives Gin-san some backstory that’ll be important later, agrees to let Kagura do her thang, and leaves.
This was a fairly satisfying ending. I would’ve preferred for Kagura to convince her dad herself, instead of Gin-san having to do it for her while she spent most of the episode unconscious, and the letter would’ve benefited greatly from having been set-up at some point, even if only at the very beginning of the arc. Overall, though, this was a good arc. It didn’t have the tonal dissonance of the first amnesia episode, the action remained solid throughout, and it set up some stuff for later.
Next episode the other recurring girls fight to see who will be Kagura’s replacement. Till next time.
