kotaro katsura: master of disguise

Crunchyroll’s summary for this episode starts with the phrase “Katsura is secretly a member of the Joi Faction” even though throughout the past 63 episodes it seemed to be fairly common knowledge that Katsura is the leader of the Joi Faction. Get your shit together, Crunchyroll Summary Writer.

The episode opens with Hanano Saki explaining that they got an exclusive interview with “K-san”, whom it is fairly common knowledge to the people of Edo is the leader of the Joi Faction. The interview takes place in the ramen shop run by the woman Katsura befriended in an earlier episode who instantly recognized him as the leader of the Joi Faction.

The interview is interrupted by Sogo blasting Elizabeth through the wall, which earns the Shinsengumi a scolding from Ikumatsu, who is understandably a touch miffed that they blew up her shop. Zura escapes, allowing Hanano and her crew to follow him so they can continue gathering material for their story.

The episode follows a fairly predictable pattern: Katsura answers a few questions in a manner that makes him look like an incompetent moron, Sogo shows up, they run off, lather, rinse, repeat. Katsura manages to make himself look cool by the end, and even helps keep Hanano and her crew from getting arrested, only to ruin it by blowing up both her and the Shinsengumi.

All in all, it’s a good episode. It was nice seeing Ikumatsu again, and the formulaic nature of the episode added to the comedic nature in a way I don’t know enough about the theory of comedic writing to explain aside from “something something Rule of Three”.

Next episode the Odd Jobs crew goes bug catching. Crunchyroll, please hire me to write episode summaries for you. I’ll work for cheap and can distill just about any episode plot into one sentence. Till next time.
