THE STORY THUS FAR: in the shinsengumi crisis arc, ito tried to assassinate kondo while hijikata was dealing with having his soul eaten by a cursed sword, ito ended up betrayed by his allies the kiheitai because of course you were you idiot takasugi is insane and you represent the people he is trying to murder to death, and ito was forgiven and allowed to die in a fight with hijikata instead of committing seppuku with hijikata as his second like he should’ve because it would’ve allowed him to die like a samurai while publicly taking responsibility for being a stupid asshole. i mean the fight worked, too, but i wanted to see hijikata cut his asshole head off. and then there was a SOCCER EPISODE! WOO!

In this episode, the Odd Jobs crew is hired by a yakuza boss to lure his hikikomori son out of the shed he shut himself up in. The first half largely follows the formula of: Odd Jobs tries something, it doesn’t work, Odd Jobs gets swords and guns shoved in their faces, Utsuzo sticks a note through the door, Odd Jobs tries something else, lather, rinse, repeat. It is hilarious.

In the second half, Gin-san discovers that Utsuzo has been dead the whole time, and the boss’s number two guy and his girlfriend (?) have been keeping up the illusion that Utsuzo was still alive so that the number 2 guy can become the number 1 guy after the boss finishes dying of TB.

As a slight aside since Okita’s sister died the same way, I know TB was still a Big Fuckin Deal in the 19th century, but could the Amanto not be bothered to bring the medical advances required to make it a smaller Fuckin Deal along with everything else? It not as much of a problem with the yakuza boss in this episode cause he’s old, but it’s a bit weird for a young woman to die of a treatable illness in a world that has modern technology.

This was a good episode. The opening bit was funny, and the twist, while not the most original or unexpected of developments, still worked well and managed to up the tension nicely.

Next episode continues this story. Till next time.
