THE STORY THUS FAR: kyojiro revealed the motives behind his apparent betrayal, zaki attempted to go undercover in the anti-foreigner faction, zura went to prison, azumi hired odd jobs to help get in touch with some dude who looks like a character from an 80s shojo manga, gin-san bought kagura a cute umbrella, gin-san helped tama enjoy some time off, and one of okita’s squad members tried to convince hijikata to remodel the shinsengumi toilets
I think this episode might have the best title so far. It’s just fantastically funny all on its own. Whoever thought of it deserves two whole cookie.
This is another episode where Matsudaira ropes The Three Shinsenstooges into helping him assassinate his daughter’s love interest(s). This time around, Matsudaira is annoyed that Kuriko’s coworkers keep hitting on her and once again Kondo and Sogo are only too happy to play assassin, only for Mayo to once again protest that they’re being ridiculous. Matsudaira decides to let Hijikata attempt to resolve the matter without all the murder so that he might make up for getting in the way of the murdering last time. Unfortunately, it turns out Kuriko developed a crush on him after the last incident, so his plan of chasing them off by pretending to be her boyfriend ends up backfiring.
Incidentally, here are a few suggestions for ways to turn down your teenaged admirer when “your dad is my boss and also he’ll murder me” doesn’t work: “You’re too young for me,” “No, seriously, us dating is illegal,” “I don’t want to be on the sex offender registry,” “For the love of God, child, it ain’t happenin. Come back when you’re 30.” And if none of those work, just fake your own death.
Thank you for joining is for this edition of Advice Ace Isn’t Qualified to Give. Tune in next time when I teach you how to fix a plane, even though I’ve only ever flown in two of them.
Luckily for Hijikata, the Odd Jobs crew overheard Kuriko’s love confession and are in the mood to watch romance die, so instead of following my stupid suggestions, he can just follow Gin-san’s terrible ones. At one point they do think to ask the teenage girl for advice on dealing with the other teenage girl, only to ignore the only good suggestion in the episode in favor of dressing Hijikata up as a giant mayonnaise bottle.
I enjoyed this episode immensely. I did not enjoy the hints that Hijikata might’ve developed a slight attraction to his boss’s underage daughter, but as this is a filler episode it doesn’t matter and can be promptly forgotten.
A new ED started last episode. Kagura looks cute in her sundress and hat, but overall it seems to be mostly fanservice and is just okay.
Next episode is the beginning of the Ryugu Arc. Till next time.
