Oh, and Kagura’s Asshole Brother is back. Because of course he is. He was in the preview last episode.
Gotta say, did not expect Kamui’s Return to include him kicking a guy’s head off. That was freaking awesome. That kick did what the whole arc focused on his backstory did not: I really like Kamui now.
Since I didn’t write any Gintama Reviews of that arc because it aired while I was still playing catch-up, I feel this is as good a time as any to sum it up: it was good, I guess. The story between Kagura and Kagura’s Asshole Brother’s parents was cute, but The Reveal that Kamui got mad at his dad for Cats in the Cradling them and accidentally kinda-sorta-but-not-really killed his mom seemed a bit weak. The conclusion was a bit too neat and it had the old problem of Gin-san being more involved that he really needed to be. The main things that stuck with me were that the setting looked super bland and boring (especially for what was supposed to be an alien planet but pretty much just looked like New Mexico) and I got really goddamn sick of it, and the “He wants to fuck you”, which is one of the funniest bits in the whole series. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I probably would’ve liked it more if I’d liked Kamui and/or his dad more going in. Since I was mostly lukewarm toward them, I ended up being mostly lukewarm toward the arc all about them. Go figure.
But who cares about any of that? Did you see Kamui kick that dude’s fucking head off?! Badass!
Kagura and Kagura’s Asshole Brother taking a break from fighting the bad guy to fight each other, and then using the bad guy to fight each other, was one of those rare, blessed moments of siblings in anime acting like siblings in real life and I will treasure it always.
Next episode, the Big Bad may or may not continue to do stuff for the first time in like five months. Till next time.
