First Impression: Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka

Oh, look a magical girl anime. Please don’t be overly cutesy or grim-dark.

So cute, yet so evil.

Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka follows a magical girl with severe PTSD as she is brought out of retirement to join a newly formed spec-ops squad focusing on terrorist and other threats. And while that sounds like it’s leaning into the ‘grim-dark edgy inversion’ type of Magical Girl Anime, it’s really not.

Yes, it’s a more serious take on the genre, but it treats its subject matter with a sensitivity and respect that most wanna-be edgy MG anime lack. At this point, it appears to be exploring a topic that’s often neglected in this genre (as far as I’m aware): what happens to the magical girls after the Big Bad Supernatural Threat is defeated?

I really liked this episode and I have high hopes for the series as a whole. See for yourself, and let me know what you think!
