First Impressions: Jujutsu Kaisen

Fun fact, I had just finished this episode and was talking to my sibling (who’s read the manga) about it, and while debating a certain character’s dietary habits, they said “Yum, yum, Cheetos!” and then ran away while I tried to keep my coffee from going out my nose. If that’s not a recommendation, I don’t know what is.

Jujutsu Kaisen is a supernatural anime about ninjas – sorry, “people with cursed energy” – who fight demons. Oh, and the main character is a high schooler who quickly becomes the vessel for super powerful demon that tries to take over his body and fails because Yuuji is Just That Special or something. It’s the first episode, I don’t know what’s going on yet.

Snark aside, it’s not a bad premiere. Yuuji is your standard over-powered Good Dumb Boy who eats the mummified finger of a demon to save his friends from another, weaker demon that would otherwise kill them. It’s reminding me of a certain other ninja series, but that might just be the ninjas who get their special powers from dealing with demons (metaphorically speaking) and the tsundere future best friend/teammate that shows our protagonist no respect or kindness whatsoever, even after Yuuji’s saved his life. The animation is solid, the characters are likable if not terribly unique, and I’m looking forward to giving it a couple more episodes to establish itself as a unique property.

They’re good dogs, Yuujin.
