First Impressions: OSAMAKE: Romcom Where the Childhood Friend Won’t Lose

This whole notion of potential love interests “winning” or “losing” implies the thing to be won or lost is in some way desirable, when 999,999,999 times out of a million, he is not. Like, oh no, you missed out on your chance to have awkward virginal sex with a faceless audience avatar with no personality whatever will you do. If anything, the girl he picks is the poor, unfortunate loser.

Anyway, I have a sneaking suspicion this is based on a light novel. If I’m right, reward me by supporting us on Patreon. If I’m not, punish me by supporting us on Patreon.

alright, osamake, i’ll make you a deal: set these motherfuckers on fire and i’ll hype you up all season AND buy the blu-rays

At this point, complaining that the character designs look exactly like character designs from other anime has become as much a cliché with me as complaining that all sports and idol anime are the same show, but in this case, I really have seen every single one of these characters somewhere before, and for once I can immediately pinpoint at least one instance where (there are very minor differences, but basically: Boring GeneriDude is from Clannad, Kachi is from Bunny Girl Senpai, Kuroha is from Oresuki, and Abe is both Boring GeneriDude with blond hair, and that guy from SAO who’s just that series’ Boring GeneriDude with blond hair) which means there are probably half a billion more characters they all look exactly like. The only character who looks in any way distinctive is Meiko, and I will give the show props for having a fat girl who is important enough to be featured in the ED (though not as heavily as the love interests, of course).

I’m not sure how to feel about this one. On one hand, the characters range from bland to annoying to annoyingly bland, and claiming that Kachi was leading Boring GeneriDude on by wanting to be friends with him is fucked up incel logic; but on the other there’s room for the main cast to develop, and Our Presumed Heroes using the same language as the creeps pictured above to declare Kachi “guilty” suggests the series could be trying to push back against that fucked up incel logic.

My hopes aren’t high, but there’s only one other anime I’m watching on Wednesdays so far this season so at least I’ll have time for it, probably. If you’re interested, you might want to tide yourself over with one of the three other series I mentioned (especially Bunny Girl Senpai. In fact, fuck this show and every other romcom this season and just watch Bunny Girl Senpai) while waiting to see what the show wants to do. In the meantime, I’ll be giving it three episodes.
