First Impressions: Scarlet Nexus

Is this a dating sim? This would make a GREAT dating sim.

I’m not even kidding. It has everything a good dating sim needs so far; a few solid but not especially remarkable potential love interests (including the one that you’re obviously meant to pick, whose route will inevitably be the one to tie up the most loose plot threads and deliver on some much-needed character catharsis); a good-natured and cheerfully competitive best friend who’s by all accounts very good at what they do, but who will never be able to measure up to the Main Character, and so will be treated as incompetent comic relief regardless of his actual abilities; a Main Character who’s vaguely pleasant but kind of uninteresting and generic so that we can easily project ourselves onto him; and a world where you’re routinely at risk of having your brain eaten by monster zombies that’re being manipulated as part of some vague shadowy conspiracy led by a real Karen.

The visuals are a little nicer than most of the dating sims I’ve played, although the tendency for your characters to somehow never have blood on them regardless of who or how much they’ve been fighting has been faithfully preserved. The music is a lot nicer, too; it’s a bit generic, but it’s fast-paced and intense while still being very fun. Also, I love the dynamic between Yuito and Nagi.

All in all, a solid premiere. Can’t wait to see which route Yuito ends up picking first.

If you’ve read this far, consider donating to us on Patreon! For five dollars a month you get access to our Discord server, where you can explain to me why a videogame that’s been out for a week gets an anime adaptation, but The Last Jedi still doesn’t have a sequel. If you can’t, or don’t want to, help us out financially, no problem! Even just sharing the site around helps us a lot, and we really appreciate it! Have a fantastic day, and I hope the universe treats you kindly!
